Audiences have decided that they like robot boxing, as Real Steel has topped the US box office, taking a solid $27.3 million in its first three days. Although not a blockbuster start, it's pretty good for early October and should ensure the film has legs over the coming weeks. That's good news for Dreamworks, which needs another success following the major failure of Cowboys & Aliens.
Coming in second on the chart was George Clooney's politial drama The Ides Of March, which took $10.4 million. As with Real Steel, it's not an amazing opening, but it's not bad for the type of movie it is, benefitting the draw of Clooney and Ryan Gosling, as well as decent reviews.
Those were the only new entries on the chart, but at least for the first time in weeks, a new movie has managed to top the charts and pull in a decent audience. It's a pattern that should be continued over the coming weeks with the likes of Paranormal Activity 3 and The Thing coming out.
