Harry Potter 6 Takes £20 Million In The UK

It's not a surprise that Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince has topped the UK box office, however the makers must be pleased that it's had the biggest weekend gross of the year. From last Wednesday to Sunday, the movie took £19.75 million at the cinema, with £11.93 million of that coming from Friday to Sunday, which beats the year's previous best, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, which took £8.35 million last month. The movie's massive take pushed the overall UK box office to its biggest weekend for over a year, with all movies grossing an impressive £27.75 million.

In five days The Half Blood Prince's UK box office total has already overtaken Night at the Museum 2, Wolverine, Angels & Demons and Terminator Salvation, and by the end of next weekend it's almost certain to have raced past the likes of Transformers 2, Star Trek and Ice Age 3 to take the lead for 2009 at the UK box office.

Elsewhere two comedies took a big tumble, with Bruno dropping 54% from last weekend to slump from first place to third, while Year One slid 78%, making only £316 per screen. However Ice Age 3 is holding up remarkably well, staying at number 2 despite the family film competition from Half Blood Prince. Part of the reason for its strength is the increase in 3D screens in the UK, which are still showing the movie and attracting families with children who've just broken up for the summer holidays.

The only other new entry in the UK top 10 was Moon, which made $158,000 from only 57 screen, which is a great start for a movie that's received incredibly good reviews and had lots of positive word of mouth.
