And the nominations are in! While the Oscars faff about and prepare to announce their finalists tomorrow, as always the Razzies - the annual awards for the Worst 'Achievements' in Film - are a day ahead. They've now announced their nominees that 'honour' the very worst that Hollywood has released over the past 12th months. Forget about Up In The Air and The Hurt Locker, as The Razzies are only interested in the awful.
This year's Razzies Worst Picture category includes some unabashed duds and some movies that made a lot of money, but which the awards body still thinks were complete trash. All About Steve, G.I. Joe, Land of the Lost, Old Dogs and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen are all in the running for cinema's least desired prize. That said, while no wants a Razzie, both Halle Berry and Paul Verhoeven turned up personally to collect theirs, for Catwoman and Showgirls respectively, showing at least some people in Hollywood have a sense of humour.
In other categories, the Worst Actor fight is a battle between the three Jonas Brothers, Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy and John Travolta, while Beyonce, Sandra Bullock, Miley Cyrus, Megan Fox and Sarah Jessica Parker line up for the Worst Actress award. In fact if Sandra Bullock wins, she may become the first actress to win the Oscar and Razzie in the same year for different films, as she's a strong contender for the Academy Award for The Blind Side, while the Razzies nominates her for All About Steve.
However it's Transformers 2 and Land Of The Lost that comes off worst, with seven Razzie nominations apiece, spread across categories including Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, Worst Screen Couple and Worst Director. Twi-hards probably won't be impressed either that New Moon got nominated in the Worst Rip-Off, Remake or Sequel, Worst Supporting Actor (Robert Pattinson), Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Couple categories.
As 2009 was also the end of the decade and it's the awards 30th Anniversary, the Razzies are also handing out gongs for the Worst Picture, Actor and Actress of the noughties. In the running for Worst Picture of the Decade are Battlefield Earth, Freddy Got Fingered, Gigli, I Know Who Killed Me and Swept Away, all of which are previous Razzie winners, scoring at least nine or 10 previous nominations apiece.
The 30th Annual Razzie Awards will be handed out on March 6th, 24-hours before the Oscars.
