This is getting a bit boring now. Every week comes the announcement that Avatar has topped the US box office again and set yet more records. And yes, for the 4,756th time (well, the seventh time), Avatar has come out number one on the North American box office chart. taking another $30 million from Friday to Sunday.
It's total of $594 million puts it within spitting distance of Titanic's $600 million all-time US box office record. Once Avatar passes that mark, which it should do in the next few days, it can add the US and Canada record to the international and global number 1 it already holds.
The top new entry was Mel Gibson's return to the big screen, Edge Of Darkness, which came in at number 2 with $17 million. That would be be a decent start for most films opening in January, but unfortunately it's been rather overshadowed by Avatar's success. When In Rome, starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, opened in the number 3 spot, with an okay but not particularly impressive $12.0 million.
Take a look below for the full US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 29th-31st. I promise one day Avatar won't be at number 1, but for now it's still outshining everything else Hollywood is trying to entice audiences with. However, with only Dear John and From Paris With Love opening wide next week, exepct Avatar to top the charts for an eighth week.
