Avatar & Hangover Top The Golden Globes

Plus the full list of winners

Avatar and The Hangover won the big prizes at the Golden Globes last night, with the former picking up Best Motion Picture, Drama and the latter the Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical award. The Hangover was a bit of a surprise winner, as many had expected (500) Days Of Summer to walk away with the prize, however in many respects this year's Globes was as much a celebration of box office success as anything else.

Also a bit of a surprise was Robert Downey Jr.'s Best Film Actor, Comedy Or Musical win for Sherlock Holmes. Less shocking were the other Best Actor/Actress prizes, which went to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia (giving Streep a Globe is pretty much an annual tradition, as she now has seven of them) and Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side.

However if there was one theme we can pick up from the Globes for the Oscars, it's that it's a pretty open field. While Avatar picked up Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director, a wide range of movies picked up other awards, including Precious, The Blind Side, Up In The Air and Inglourious Basterds. So as other awards have suggested, it's unlikely there'll be one film snapping up all the Academy Awards, although it does, of course, give a little bit more impetus to Avatar for the Best Picture win, although it's by no means a shoo-in.
