Judd Apatow must have been really impressed with Azi Ansari's work on his recent movie Funny People, as he and Universal studios have bought three pitches from the comic and director Jason Woliner.
It seems Ansari, who played Randy in Funny People and can also be seen in Parks & Recreation, is planning to be big in the movie, and even he seems surprised to have sold all three pitches, telling Variety, “We didn’t expect all three to work. We had a breakfast meeting with Judd and pitched them. We were like, ‘Which one do you like?’ He wanted all three.”
The three films are said to be very different to one another, and while not too much info has been released on the pitches, the first is tentatively titled 'Let's Do This' and is described as a road movie about two people who work for a motivational speaking company, the second follows the story of a disgraced astronaut who has to return to Earth to clear his name, while the third will be based on Ansari's Randy character from Funny People.
All the films will be director by Woliner, who's also expected to co-script at least one of them. Apatow must really have faith in Ansari and see him as a potential new force in big screen comedy. That said, buying a pitch is a long way from putting any of these movies into production. However Azi will next be seen in the Apatow produced, Get Him To The Greek, with is due out next year.
