Michael Jackson's This Is It has done as well in the UK as it has elsewhere in the world, racking up a very good £4.8 million in its first five days in cinemas. That means that after less than a week in cinemas, it's already the UKs biggest concert film (beating In Bed With Madonna) and the second highest grossing documentary ever, behind Fahrenheit 9/11. It certainly isn't a bad start for a film pieced together from rehearsal footage and should ensure the film goes on to become the UK's highest grossing documentary in history.
Other new entries didn't quite as well, with the animated movie 9 limping in in seventh place with £468,455. An Education only made it to eighth place on the chart with £399,122, although as it was playing on less than a hundred screens, that isn't too bad a start at all. Danny Dyer and 50 Cent's new movie, Dead Man Running, also just squeezed into the top 10 with an okay £198,000, despite getting a relatively small release. However the distributors aren't likely to be upset, as recently Dyer's films have all done much better on DVD than at cinemas, with this one expected to do the same.
However perhaps most impressive was Up, which took another £3.4 million over the weekend, but thanks to the half term holiday, it made £9.5 million over the full week, which is a good total for any film, but incredibly impressive for a movie on its third week in cinemas.
